The HMC213BMS8E from Analog Devices is a passive GaAs MMIC double-balanced mixer designed for frequency conversion from 1.5GHz to 4.5GHz. It can operate as an upconverter, downconverter, biphase demodulator, modulator or phase comparator.
The device provides a DC to 1.5GHz intermediate-frequency range and is supplied in a compact 8-lead MSOP package. Its passive architecture does not require a DC power supply, helping simplify compact RF transceiver designs.

Upconversion and Downconversion
When used as a downconverter, the HMC213BMS8E converts RF signals between 1.5GHz and 4.5GHz to an IF signal between DC and 1.5GHz.
When used as an upconverter, it converts an IF input between DC and 1.5GHz to an RF output within the 1.5GHz to 4.5GHz range.
The mixer can therefore support transmit and receive signal paths in wireless communication, microwave radio and RF test systems.

Design Considerations
The RF and LO ports are internally AC-coupled and matched to 50Ω. The IF port is DC-coupled.
For applications that do not require IF operation down to DC, an external series capacitor should be selected according to the required IF frequency range. When DC operation is required, the IF source or sink current must not exceed 9mA.
The PCB should use controlled 50Ω transmission lines. Ground pins should connect directly to the ground plane with sufficient grounding vias to maintain RF performance.
