RFQ

The HMC553ALC3B from Analog Devices is a general-purpose passive double-balanced mixer covering RF and LO frequencies from 6GHz to 14GHz. It can operate as either an upconverter or downconverter and supports an IF frequency range from DC to 5GHz.

The device integrates optimized balun structures in a compact surface-mount package. It requires no DC bias, external matching circuit or wire bonding, helping simplify microwave system design and assembly.

Key Features

  • RF and LO frequency range: 6GHz to 14GHz

  • IF frequency range: DC to 5GHz

  • Passive operation with no DC bias

  • Typical 7dB conversion loss from 6GHz to 11GHz

  • Typical 9dB conversion loss from 11GHz to 14GHz

  • Typical input IP3 up to 22dBm

  • Typical LO-to-RF isolation: 36dB to 37dB

  • LO drive range: 9dBm to 15dBm

Upconversion and Downconversion

The HMC553ALC3B supports both frequency upconversion and downconversion. Its wide DC to 5GHz IF bandwidth gives designers flexibility when selecting intermediate frequencies for microwave radios, measurement equipment and wideband receiver architectures.

For typical operation, a 13dBm LO signal is recommended. The supported 9dBm to 15dBm LO range provides additional flexibility when integrating the mixer with different local oscillator sources.

Design Considerations

The RF and LO ports are AC-coupled and matched to 50Ω. The IF port is DC-coupled. When DC operation is required, the IF pin must not source or sink more than 3mA.

The exposed package pad and ground pins should be connected to a low-inductance RF and DC ground. Proper grounding and transmission-line layout are important for achieving the specified conversion loss, isolation and linearity.

Applications

  • Microwave radio systems

  • VSAT communication equipment

  • Point-to-point radios

  • RF and microwave test equipment

  • Electronic warfare and electronic countermeasure systems

  • Command, control, communications and intelligence systems
