Cyntec HBED vs HBTD Power Inductors | Series Differences & Selection Guide

Cyntec offers a wide range of compact power chokes for DC-DC converters, POL power supplies, servers and high-density electronic systems. The HBED and HBTD series are both molded SMD power inductors, but they should not be selected or replaced only by looking at inductance.

Engineers should compare package size, component height, DCR, rated current, saturation current and PCB footprint before choosing between HBED and HBTD. For a broader overview of Cyntec power inductors, see ourCyntec Power Inductors Selection Guide.

What Is the Cyntec HBED Series?

The Cyntec HBED series is a family of molded power chokes designed for compact switching power supplies. Different HBED package codes and inductance values allow engineers to balance current capability, DCR, height and PCB area.

HBED models are suitable for applications such as:

  • DC-DC buck converters

  • Point-of-load power supplies

  • FPGA and processor power rails

  • Industrial embedded systems

  • Server and networking power designs

For compact low-profile applications, you can also compare the HBED family with Cyntec'sHBLE041B, HBLE041H and HBLE042A low-profile power inductors.

Example: HBED042T-R33MS

The HBED042T-R33MS is a 0.33µH-class Cyntec power choke suitable for low-inductance switching rails. A lower inductance value can be useful in high-frequency converters where fast transient response is important.

What Is the Cyntec HBTD Series?

The Cyntec HBTD series is another molded SMD power choke family for DC-DC power conversion. HBTD models are available in different package sizes and inductance values, allowing designers to choose a part according to current, thermal and mechanical requirements.

When evaluating an HBTD model, pay particular attention to:

  • Nominal inductance

  • Maximum DCR

  • Rated current

  • Saturation current

  • Package dimensions

  • Component height

  • Recommended PCB land pattern

Example: HBTD054T-1R0MS

The HBTD054T-1R0MS is a 1.0µH-class power choke. Compared with a lower-inductance part such as a 0.33µH device, a 1.0µH inductor generally provides lower ripple current under the same converter conditions, although the final choice depends on switching frequency, load current and transient requirements.

These two parts should not be considered direct substitutes simply because they belong to similar Cyntec power choke families. The converter design must be checked first.

How to Choose Between HBED and HBTD

1. Check the Required Inductance

Start with the inductance recommended by the DC-DC controller or reference design. Common Cyntec power choke values include 0.10µH, 0.22µH, 0.33µH, 0.47µH, 0.68µH and 1.0µH.

2. Compare DCR

Lower DCR helps reduce conduction loss, especially in high-current power rails. For server, processor and high-density computing applications, even a small DCR difference can affect efficiency and temperature rise.

3. Verify Saturation Current

The inductor must maintain acceptable inductance during peak current conditions. Always compare Isat with the maximum transient current of the converter.

4. Check Thermal Current Rating

A part may have sufficient saturation current but still run too hot under continuous load. Rated current and temperature rise therefore need to be checked together.

5. Confirm Package and PCB Footprint

Different HBED and HBTD package codes may have different length, width and height. Do not assume that two parts with the same inductance are mechanically interchangeable.

Are HBED and HBTD Suitable for GPU or CPU VRM?

HBED and HBTD parts can be used in many DC-DC and processor power designs, but extremely high-current GPU and CPU voltage regulator modules may require more specialized inductor families.

For high-current processor rails, see:Cyntec HCBS9610F High-Current Inductors for GPU & CPU VRM.

For modern multiphase AI server and xPU power designs, Cyntec also provides TLVR inductors. See ourCyntec TLVR Inductor Selection Guidefor TLM966411F, TLM966413F and TLM104613F series comparisons.

HBED vs HBTD Replacement Checklist

Before replacing an HBED model with an HBTD model, or vice versa, verify:

  • Nominal inductance

  • Inductance tolerance

  • Maximum DCR

  • Rated current / heat-rating current

  • Saturation current

  • Operating temperature

  • Package dimensions

  • Component height

  • PCB footprint and pad layout

Two inductors with the same inductance value are not automatically drop-in replacements.

FAQ

What is the difference between Cyntec HBED and HBTD?

HBED and HBTD are different Cyntec molded power choke families. The main differences depend on the exact model, including package size, inductance, DCR, current rating, saturation current and component height.

Can an HBED power inductor replace an HBTD model?

Possibly, but not based on inductance alone. Electrical ratings, dimensions, PCB footprint and thermal performance must all be verified before substitution.

Which Cyntec power inductor is suitable for GPU or CPU VRM?

For very high-current GPU and CPU VRM applications, Cyntec HCBS or TLVR families may be more suitable than a standard HBED or HBTD power choke. The required current, DCR, inductance and transient performance should be checked against the regulator design.
