KRYTAR Directional Couplers Above 100 GHz

KRYTAR offers compact coaxial directional couplers operating to 110 GHz for millimeter-wave and upper W-band signal sampling. These products are designed for systems that exceed the 67 GHz limit of conventional 1.85 mm couplers and require operation within the 75–110 GHz W band.

The two primary models are:

  • KRYTAR 1100110010: 10–110 GHz

  • KRYTAR 1500110010: 50–110 GHz

Both models provide 10 dB nominal coupling, 20 W average input power and 1.0 mm female connectors. They can be used for high-frequency power monitoring, broadband component testing, W-band radar, antenna systems and emerging sub-THz research platforms.

KRYTAR 1100110010: 10–110 GHz Directional Coupler

The KRYTAR 1100110010 provides 100 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth in a single coaxial directional coupler. It covers frequencies from 10 GHz through 110 GHz, including parts of the X, Ku, K, Ka, Q, U, V and W bands.

Its coupling specification is divided into two frequency ranges:

  • 10 ±1.5 dB from 10 to 90 GHz

  • 10 ±1.8 dB from 90 to 110 GHz

Frequency sensitivity is specified at ±1.25 dB from 10 to 90 GHz and ±1.8 dB from 90 to 110 GHz. Directivity is at least 10 dB up to 55 GHz and at least 7 dB from 55 to 110 GHz.

The model is suitable when one test setup must operate across both microwave and millimeter-wave bands without changing the directional coupler.

KRYTAR 1500110010: 50–110 GHz Directional Coupler

The KRYTAR 1500110010 covers 50–110 GHz and is intended for systems that do not require operation below 50 GHz.

It provides:

  • 10 ±1.8 dB nominal coupling

  • ±1.8 dB frequency sensitivity

  • 5.5 dB maximum insertion loss

  • 7 dB minimum directivity

  • 2.5:1 maximum VSWR

  • 20 W average input power

  • 1.0 mm female connectors

The 50 GHz lower limit makes it suitable for U-, V- and W-band measurement systems, high-frequency radar, millimeter-wave communications and component testing.

Typical Applications

KRYTAR directional couplers operating beyond 100 GHz can be used in:

  • W-band component testing

  • Millimeter-wave amplifier characterization

  • Frequency multiplier testing

  • W-band radar transmitters

  • Imaging radar systems

  • Electronic warfare equipment

  • High-frequency antenna measurement

  • Phased-array and beamforming systems

  • 6G and sub-THz research

  • Broadband signal monitoring

  • Forward and reflected power measurement

  • Automatic level control systems

  • Material characterization

  • Laboratory and production test equipment

  • EMC and high-frequency research systems

Can the 67 GHz and 110 GHz Models Replace Each Other?

A 67 GHz coupler cannot replace a 110 GHz model in an application operating above 67 GHz.

A 110 GHz coupler may cover the required frequency, but it is not automatically the best replacement because:

  • Only 10 dB coupling is available in the listed 110 GHz models.

  • The connector changes from 1.85 mm to 1.0 mm.

  • Insertion loss and directivity are different.

  • New adapters, cables and calibration standards may be required.

  • The connected instrument must support the higher-frequency interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which KRYTAR directional couplers operate above 100 GHz?

KRYTAR 1100110010 covers 10–110 GHz, while KRYTAR 1500110010 covers 50–110 GHz. Both operate beyond 100 GHz and provide 10 dB nominal coupling.

What connector is used by the 110 GHz couplers?

Both models use precision 1.0 mm female connectors. The cables, adapters and calibration equipment must also support operation to 110 GHz.

What is the difference between 1100110010 and 1500110010?

The 1100110010 covers 10–110 GHz, while the 1500110010 covers 50–110 GHz. Both provide 10 dB coupling, but their coupling, directivity and VSWR specifications differ across the operating ranges.

Can a 1.85 mm cable connect directly to a 1.0 mm coupler?

No. A 1.85 mm connector should not be directly mated with a 1.0 mm connector. Use a correctly specified adapter rated for the required frequency and power.

Which model is suitable for W-band testing?

Both models cover the 75–110 GHz W band. Select the 1100110010 when frequencies below 50 GHz are also required. Select the 1500110010 when the test range is limited to 50–110 GHz.
