Cincon EC2SAW8 vs EC3SAW8 vs EC4SAW8 | 2W–6W SIP-8 DC-DC
Cincon EC2SAW8 vs EC3SAW8 vs EC4SAW8: 2W, 3W and 6W SIP-8 DC-DC Converter Selection Guide
The Cincon EC2SAW8, EC3SAW8 and EC4SAW8 are compact, regulated, isolated DC-DC converter series designed for industrial control, communication equipment and distributed power systems. All three support a 9–75VDC ultra-wide input range, 3000VDC input-to-output isolation and a miniature SIP-8 package.
Which series should you choose? Select EC2SAW8 for lower-power loads up to 2W, EC3SAW8 for applications requiring up to 3W, and EC4SAW8 for higher-current loads up to 6W. However, output current, remote on/off logic, thermal derating and PCB compatibility must also be checked before selecting or replacing a converter.

The three series share similar electrical and mechanical characteristics, but they are not automatically interchangeable. In particular, the EC3SAW8 uses positive remote on/off logic, whereas the EC2SAW8 and EC4SAW8 use negative logic according to their published product specifications.
Actual output power also depends on the selected output voltage. For example, the 3.3V models do not all reach the full nominal series power rating.
2. Real Model Numbers and Output Current Comparison
The following model numbers and current ratings are taken from Cincon's published product tables. These are useful when selecting a converter for a specific sensor, controller or isolated interface circuit.
Single-Output Models
| Output | EC2SAW8 | EC3SAW8 | EC4SAW8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.3V | EC2SAW8-48S33N 0.5A | EC3SAW8-48S33P 0.7A | EC4SAW8-48S33N 1.5A |
| 5V | EC2SAW8-48S05N 0.4A | EC3SAW8-48S05P 0.6A | EC4SAW8-48S05N 1.2A |
| 12V | EC2SAW8-48S12N 0.167A | EC3SAW8-48S12P 0.25A | EC4SAW8-48S12N 0.5A |
| 15V | EC2SAW8-48S15N 0.134A | EC3SAW8-48S15P 0.2A | EC4SAW8-48S15N 0.4A |
For example, a 5V industrial controller requiring 0.3A can use the EC2SAW8-48S05N as a candidate. A 5V load drawing 0.5A requires at least the EC3SAW8-48S05P rating, while a 5V load drawing 1A requires the higher-current EC4SAW8-48S05N.
These examples assume appropriate input voltage, operating temperature and thermal conditions. Additional design margin may be required for load transients and elevated temperatures.
Dual-Output Models
| Output | EC2SAW8 | EC3SAW8 | EC4SAW8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ±5V | EC2SAW8-48D05N ±0.2A | EC3SAW8-48D05P ±0.3A | EC4SAW8-48D05N ±0.6A |
| ±12V | EC2SAW8-48D12N ±0.083A | EC3SAW8-48D12P ±0.125A | EC4SAW8-48D12N ±0.25A |
| ±15V | EC2SAW8-48D15N ±0.067A | EC3SAW8-48D15P ±0.1A | EC4SAW8-48D15N ±0.2A |
Dual-output converters can be useful for operational amplifiers, analog signal-conditioning circuits and industrial measurement equipment requiring positive and negative supply rails.
When using dual-output models, check the total output power, load balance and cross-regulation requirements. The current shown for a ±12V model applies to each output rail under the specified conditions.
3. Why Choose a 9–75V Ultra-Wide Input DC-DC Converter?
Industrial equipment is commonly built around 12V, 24V and 48V nominal DC buses. A converter with a 9–75V input range can support several of these systems without changing the main power module.
This flexibility is particularly useful for:
Industrial controllers: Providing isolated 3.3V or 5V power from a 24V control cabinet supply.
Communication equipment: Generating local regulated outputs from 48V or 54V DC distribution systems.
Battery-powered equipment: Maintaining regulated outputs across changing battery voltages within the allowed input range.
Distributed power architectures: Supporting multiple isolated circuits connected to a shared industrial DC bus.
The 9–75V input range provides flexibility, but designers must still verify input surge protection, undervoltage behavior and external EMI filtering. A wide input specification does not mean the converter can tolerate unlimited transients.
4. Industrial Applications: Which Series Fits Your Design?
EC2SAW8: Low-Power Isolated Sensor and Interface Circuits
The EC2SAW8 is suitable for compact industrial control boards with relatively low auxiliary power requirements. Typical applications include isolated sensor interfaces, low-power monitoring circuits and communication interfaces.
For example, EC2SAW8-48S05N provides 5V at 0.4A, while EC2SAW8-48D12N offers a dual ±12V output for low-power analog circuits.
EC3SAW8: Mid-Power Industrial Control Electronics
The EC3SAW8 is intended for applications requiring additional output current while retaining the same compact SIP-8 dimensions.
EC3SAW8-48S05P supplies 5V at 0.6A, and EC3SAW8-48D12P provides ±12V at ±0.125A. These options can support industrial controllers, measurement interfaces and communication subsystems.
Designers should pay particular attention to the positive remote on/off function when integrating EC3SAW8 into an existing control circuit.
EC4SAW8: Higher-Power Embedded and Communication Systems
The EC4SAW8 provides up to 6W and is suitable when the equipment requires higher output current without increasing the SIP-8 package footprint.
For example, EC4SAW8-48S05N provides 5V at 1.2A, while EC4SAW8-48S12N delivers 12V at 0.5A.
Applications include industrial embedded controllers, isolated communication equipment, I/O modules and distributed auxiliary power rails.
5. SIP-8 vs DIP-24: EC3SAW8 and EC4SAW8 vs EC3AW8 and EC4AW8
Cincon also offers the EC3AW8 and EC4AW8 families with a DIP-24 package. Although they share the 9–75V input range and similar output-power classes, the mechanical formats are different.
| Parameter | EC2/3/4SAW8 | EC3/4AW8 |
|---|---|---|
| Package | SIP-8 | DIP-24 |
| Dimensions | 0.86 × 0.36 × 0.44 in | 1.25 × 0.80 × 0.40 in |
| Input Range | 9–75VDC | 9–75VDC |
| Isolation | 3000VDC | 3000VDC |
| Power Classes | 2W, 3W, 6W | 3W, 6W |
The SIP-8 versions are attractive for compact board layouts where a narrow through-hole module is preferred. The DIP-24 versions may better suit existing PCB designs using a DIP footprint.
For a more detailed discussion of the DIP-24 products, read our Cincon EC3AW8 vs EC4AW8 3W and 6W DC-DC Converter Comparison.
Important: SIP-8 and DIP-24 modules are not direct PCB replacements because their mechanical footprints and pin arrangements differ.
6. Can EC4SAW8 Replace EC2SAW8 or EC3SAW8?
Replacing a lower-power DC-DC module with a higher-power alternative may be possible, but output power alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
Before making a replacement, engineers should verify:
Identical output voltage and required current capacity
Input voltage and surge conditions
PCB footprint and complete pin assignments
Remote on/off control logic and default operating state
Maximum external output capacitance
Efficiency, temperature rise and thermal derating
EMI requirements and external filtering
For example, EC3SAW8-48S05P and EC4SAW8-48S05N both provide regulated 5V outputs, but their remote-control logic differs. A circuit designed for one control mode should not be assumed compatible with the other without reviewing the official electrical specifications.
