Get Price & AvailabilityPico 5AVR500 5V to 500V 1W Regulated High Voltage DC-DC Converter
The Pico 5AVR500 is a miniature isolated and regulated high-voltage DC-DC converter that generates a 500VDC output from a nominal 5VDC input. It provides up to 1W output power and 2mA output current in a through-hole package measuring 1.25 × 0.70 × 0.50 inches.
Unlike proportional high-voltage converters, the 5AVR500 maintains a regulated output from no load to full load. It also includes shutdown control and protection against input overvoltage, output short circuit, overtemperature and overcurrent.

Applications
The Pico 5AVR500 is suitable for low-current circuits that require a stable and isolated 500V bias supply, including:
Photomultiplier tube bias supplies
Electron-beam deflection and focusing circuits
Piezoelectric transducers
Detector and sensor bias circuits
Laboratory and test instrumentation
Industrial high-voltage control circuits
Measurement systems requiring regulated high voltage
For noise-sensitive detectors and analog circuits, engineers should verify that the specified ripple level and operating frequency are compatible with the signal bandwidth.
When to Choose the Pico 5AVR500
Choose the 5AVR500 when the design requires:
A regulated 500V output from a 5V power rail
Up to 2mA output current
Stable operation from no load to full load
Through-hole PCB mounting
1500VDC input-to-output isolation
Shutdown control
Built-in short-circuit, overvoltage and thermal protection
Operation without a heatsink or active cooling
The 5AVR500 may not be the best choice when the application requires surface-mount assembly, more than 2mA at 500V, a programmable output, or standard operation below −25°C. In these cases, compare the SMV, MV or SAR families before final selection.
Related Model Comparison
| Model | Input | Output | Power | Output Type | Mounting | Best Selection Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5AVR500 | 4.5–5.5V | 500V / 2mA | 1W | Regulated | Through-hole | Stable 500V output and no minimum load |
| 5SMV500 | 4.5–5.5V | 500V / 2.5mA | 1.25W | Proportional | Surface mount | Smaller SMD package |
| 5MV500 | Nominal 5V | 500V / 2.5mA | 1.25W | Proportional | Through-hole | −55°C to +85°C standard operation |
| 5AV500 | Nominal 5V | 500V / 2.5mA | 1.25W | Proportional | Through-hole | Compact proportional-output alternative |
| 12AVR500 | 10.5–13.5V | 500V / 2mA | 1W | Regulated | Through-hole | Same regulated output for a 12V input rail |
The 5SMV500, 5MV500 and 5AV500 are proportional converters. Their outputs vary more with input voltage and load, so they should not be treated as direct replacements when the circuit depends on the regulation performance of the 5AVR500.
Equivalent and Alternative Models
There is no universal drop-in equivalent for the Pico 5AVR500. Any replacement must be checked for input range, output regulation, ripple, isolation, pinout, package size, temperature rating and protection functions.
Possible alternatives include:
Pico 5SMV500: Select when surface-mount assembly and a smaller footprint are more important than internal output regulation.
Pico 5MV500: Select for military, aerospace or harsh-environment equipment requiring standard −55°C to +85°C operation. External regulation may be needed.
Pico 5AV500: Select when a compact through-hole proportional converter is acceptable.
Pico 12AVR500: Select when the available system input is 12V instead of 5V.
Pico 5SAR500SM: Consider when a regulated, programmable SMD converter with higher output power is required.
These models are not automatically pin-compatible with the 5AVR500. Engineers should compare the mechanical drawing and connection diagram before making a substitution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Pico 5AVR500 output regulated?
Yes. The 5AVR500 is regulated from no load to full load. Its specified maximum line regulation is 0.1%, load regulation is 0.25%, and nominal full-load output-voltage tolerance is ±0.25%.
Does the 5AVR500 require a minimum output load?
No. The AVR Series supports operation with zero minimum load, making the 5AVR500 suitable for bias circuits with low or varying current demand.
Can the 5SMV500 or 5MV500 directly replace the 5AVR500?
Not necessarily. Both provide a nominal 500V output, but they are proportional rather than internally regulated converters. Their mounting, package, temperature performance, isolation and pin configuration must also be checked before substitution.
