ITT Cannon Connectors Selection Guide

ITT Cannon manufactures harsh-environment connectors for aerospace, defense, rail transportation, heavy equipment, industrial automation, medical equipment and energy systems. Its portfolio includes MIL-DTL-38999-style circular connectors, MIL-DTL-5015-derived power and signal connectors, MIL-DTL-83513 Micro-D connectors, miniature circular connectors and sealed plastic connectors.

Choosing an ITT Cannon connector requires more than selecting the number of contacts. Engineers and buyers must also confirm the applicable standard, shell size, insert arrangement, plug or receptacle style, pin or socket contacts, termination method, coupling mechanism, keying position, plating and environmental requirements.

This guide compares the main ITT Cannon connector families and explains how to identify a suitable series and part number.

KJL, KJ and KJA/KJB D38999-Style Connectors

ITT Cannon divides its 38999-style circular connector range into:

  • KJL: D38999-style Series I

  • KJ: D38999-style Series II

  • KJA and KJB: D38999-style Series III

The KJA and KJB families use threaded coupling and are commonly selected for high-vibration aerospace and defense applications. They are available in multiple shell sizes, contact arrangements, material options, finishes and keying positions.

Typical searchable part numbers include:

  • KJA6T9F35PN

  • KJA6T11F35PN

  • KJA6T13F35PN

  • KJA6T15W35PNL

  • KJA6T19W32SAL

  • KJA6T25F35SN

  • KJA7T25W42SN

  • D38999/26FJ19PB

  • D38999/20FJ24BN

Choose this family when the equipment specification calls for a D38999-style connector, compact circular construction, high contact density or a threaded connector suitable for vibration-prone environments.

Before ordering, confirm whether the required number is an ITT Cannon KJA/KJB commercial part number or a complete MIL-DTL-38999 slash-sheet number. Similar shell sizes do not automatically make two connectors interchangeable.

ITT Cannon CA Threaded Connectors

CA Threaded connectors are derived from MIL-DTL-5015-style designs. They are commonly used for power, control and signal connections in industrial machinery, motors, defense equipment and transportation systems.

Common connector styles include:

  • CA3100: Wall-mount receptacle

  • CA3101: Cable-mount receptacle

  • CA3102: Box-mount receptacle

  • CA3106: Straight plug

  • CA3108: Right-angle plug

Popular CA and CA-B part numbers include:

In a part number such as CA3106E20-22S-B-F80, the fields identify characteristics including the connector style, environmental class, shell size, insert arrangement, socket contact configuration and product modification. Every field must be checked against the ITT Cannon catalog before confirming a replacement.

CA connectors are often considered when replacing or sourcing connectors based on MS3100, MS3101, MS3102, MS3106 and MS3108 configurations. However, compatibility must be verified by comparing the full insert arrangement, coupling interface, contact type, orientation, termination and mounting dimensions.

ITT Cannon CA Bayonet Connectors

CA Bayonet connectors are designed around VG95234 requirements and use reverse-bayonet coupling. Compared with a threaded connector, the bayonet mechanism allows faster mating and provides a positive locking connection for equipment exposed to vibration.

CA Bayonet is suitable for:

  • Railway equipment

  • Military vehicles

  • Construction machinery

  • Industrial drives

  • Control cabinets

  • Power distribution equipment

When selecting a CA Bayonet connector, check whether the required product is a cable plug, panel receptacle or cable receptacle. The backshell, cable clamp, contacts and sealing accessories may need to be ordered separately.

ITT Cannon KPT, KPSE and KPTC Connectors

The ITT Cannon KP family consists of miniature circular connectors designed around MIL-DTL-26482 Series I and VG95328 requirements.

The main differences are:

SeriesContact terminationMain characteristic
KPTSolder contactsPre-installed contacts for conventional solder termination
KPSECrimp contactsRemovable crimp contacts with a retention system
KPTCCrimp contactsMiniature quick-disconnect bayonet design

Representative part numbers include:

  • KPT02E16-26S

  • KPSE01F12-10S

  • MS3116F12-3P

  • MS3112E12-3S

KPT is suitable when solder termination is preferred. KPSE is normally more convenient for production harness assembly, contact replacement and field maintenance because it uses crimp contacts.

Do not select between KPT and KPSE only by contact count. Confirm the shell style, insert arrangement, contact gender, mounting method and accessories required by the cable assembly.

ITT Cannon MDM Micro-D Connectors

ITT Cannon MDM connectors are designed for applications requiring high contact density, low weight and limited installation space. The broader Micro-D range supports eight shell sizes with configurations from 9 to 100 contacts, together with selected power, coaxial and mixed-contact arrangements.

Available product types include:

  • Cable-mounted Micro-D connectors

  • PCB vertical-mount connectors

  • PCB right-angle connectors

  • Connectors with discrete wire leads

  • High-temperature versions

  • Hermetic Micro-D connectors

  • Filtered Micro-D connectors

  • Mixed power and coaxial configurations

  • Versions with integrated backshells

Popular MDM part numbers include:

Part numberBasic configuration
MDM-9SSB9-position receptacle with socket contacts
MDM-9PSM79-position plug with pin contacts
MDM-9PSK9-position plug with pin contacts
MDM-9SL2P9-position receptacle
MDM-9PH006P9-position plug cable assembly with discrete leads

MDM-15PCBR15-position right-angle PCB plug
MDM-15PH003P15-position plug with discrete wire leads
MDM-15PH006B15-position plug with discrete wire leads

Select MDM when a conventional D-Sub connector is too large or heavy. For PCB versions, verify board orientation, mounting hardware, termination length and connector height. For discrete-wire versions, confirm wire length, wire gauge, insulation type and shielding requirements.

ITT Cannon MKJ Miniature Circular Connectors

MKJ is a compact circular connector family developed for size- and weight-sensitive aerospace and defense systems. ITT Cannon offers several locking and coupling methods within the MKJ range, including:

  • UN thread coupling

  • Double-start threaded coupling

  • Bayonet coupling

  • Breakaway coupling

  • Clip-lock coupling

MKJ connectors are suitable for:

  • UAV electronics

  • Soldier-worn systems

  • Secure communications

  • Navigation equipment

  • Portable military electronics

  • Compact avionics

  • High-speed data connections

The required coupling method should be selected according to the maintenance environment. Threaded coupling provides secure retention, while breakaway and clip-lock versions are useful where rapid disconnection is required.

MKJ is not automatically interchangeable with a standard D38999 connector. Shell dimensions, coupling interfaces, keying and contact arrangements must be evaluated separately.

ITT Cannon APD Connectors

APD is a sealed plastic connector family for harsh industrial and transportation applications. The range includes configurations from 1 to 51 positions and supports power, high-voltage and signal connections.

Main APD configurations include:

  • 1-way high-power

  • 2-way high-power

  • 4-way high-voltage

  • 4-way standard

  • 6-way and 7-way

  • 19-way

  • 37-way

  • 51-way

APD connectors are commonly used in:

  • Construction equipment

  • Agricultural machinery

  • Commercial vehicles

  • Material-handling equipment

  • Industrial power systems

  • Vehicle sensors and controllers

Choose the APD cavity arrangement according to conductor size, current, voltage and signal count. Also verify the required coding, secondary lock, sealing components, contacts and wire seals.

APD connector housings, contacts and accessories may be supplied as separate items. The complete bill of materials should therefore be checked before placing an order.

ITT VEAM CIR and FRCIR Connectors

VEAM CIR and FRCIR are rugged circular connector families intended for transportation and industrial environments. They are particularly suitable for exterior rail applications where connectors may be exposed to vibration, moisture and repeated maintenance.

Typical applications include:

  • Rail vehicle-to-vehicle connections

  • Railway control systems

  • Passenger information systems

  • Ethernet and video transmission

  • Train power distribution

  • Exterior industrial equipment

  • Heavy transportation systems

For railway projects, confirm not only the electrical rating but also the applicable rail qualification, fire and smoke requirements, sealing, cable construction and installation accessories.
